Social Media

Social media is taking over the world literally. No longer is new confined to newspapers and the nightly anchor person on the news. Media can be created and shared by anyone in the world with anyone in the world. What does this mean for you and your students? How can it be frustrating for you as an educator? Why do we have to be aware of this media phenenomon?

When I teach "The Catcher in the Rye" to my students, we talk about whether or not Holden Caulfield is a reliable narrator. I think the idea of the "reliable narrator" is what is coming into question with social media. Is social media making the news more reliable or less reliable? On one hand, the news is not left for the stations to put their "spin" on the story when it comes from ordinary citizens. On the other hand, regular citizens do not practice responsible journalism. They often do not dig deeper into a news story - they just report exactly what they saw as it happened. There are all kinds of language arts lesson plans for discussion reliable narrators. Maybe we now need to apply those lessons to reliable news reports.
